What It Really Means to Think Like an Entrepreneur

To get paid for your gifts, you have to think like an entrepreneur, and it's simpler and more soulful than it sounds. Here's the one shift that turns what you know into real value.

I co-founded a chocolate company in England, and the whole business comes down to one humble fact. On their own, the raw materials aren't worth much. Cacao beans arrive from a farm in Ecuador. Coconut sugar comes from somewhere in Thailand. Sitting in their sacks, they're just cheap agricultural goods that almost nobody wants. But mix them in the right way, shape them into a bar, wrap it, and send it out, and suddenly people are delighted to pay for it. Nothing was added that wasn't already there. The ingredients were simply lifted from a lower level of value to a higher one.

That, stripped of all the jargon, is the entire act of being an entrepreneur. And once you see it that way, the word stops sounding like hustle and spreadsheets and starts sounding like something much closer to what you may already do.

The real definition

"An entrepreneur," I tell people, "is someone who takes resources from a lower level and lifts them to a higher one. They see lower-level things and the potential to make something far more valuable out of them." This isn't a self-help idea I invented. The economist Jean-Baptiste Say described the entrepreneur two centuries ago as exactly this: someone who shifts resources from an area of lower yield to one of higher yield. The chocolate maker does it with beans. You do it with wisdom.

Because here's the thing. Right now you're carrying around insight, lived experience, hard-won understanding, and care. On their own, floating in your head, those things help no one but you. They're the cacao beans in the sack, valuable in potential, useless in practice. The entrepreneurial move is simply to package them into something another person can receive and use.

You already have the raw ingredients

A coaching session is packaged wisdom. So is a short course, a guide, a talk, a book. Each one takes what was at a lower level of usable value, ideas in your head, and lifts it to a higher one, something in another person's hands that changes their week. That's it. That's the whole act. You're not becoming someone slick and salesy. You're doing what the chef does when they turn raw ingredients into a meal, or what the chocolate maker does with the beans: taking what's worth little as it is, and making it worth a great deal to the right person.

This is why getting paid is not the opposite of service. It's what lets your service reach people and sustain itself. The wisdom that stays in your head serves nobody. Shaped into something a person can actually use, it changes a life, and the exchange that comes back to you is what keeps you able to keep doing it. Much of the business work we teach is simply this, walked through step by step: how to take the gifts you already have and lift them into forms that genuinely help, in a way that stays true to your heart.

So if you've been waiting to feel like "a businessperson" before you begin, you can stop. You don't need to become someone else. You need to see yourself accurately: as someone holding a sack of valuable raw material, one packaging step away from being able to feed a lot of people.

Questions people ask

What does it mean to think like an entrepreneur? It means seeing how to take something of lower usable value and lift it to higher value. For a coach, that's turning your knowledge, experience and care into a session, course or book someone can actually use.

Do I have to be "businessy" to be an entrepreneur? No. At its root, entrepreneurship is simply value creation. If you can package what you know into something that genuinely helps people, you're doing the entrepreneurial act, heart first.

How do I turn my knowledge into something people pay for? Package it. Shape the wisdom in your head into a defined offer, a coaching package, a short course, a guide, aimed at people with a specific problem you can help with.
