Does Success Bring Wealth? Define It For Yourself First

Does success bring wealth? It depends entirely on what you mean by both. Here's how to define success and wealth for yourself — and the real way money tends to follow.

Does success bring wealth? It depends entirely on what you mean by each word. Define them for yourself, and a clearer answer appears, along with the real way money tends to follow.

In short: "Success" and "wealth" mean whatever you decide they mean. Society hands us definitions that often leave people achieving a lot and still feeling empty. Define both on your own terms first. Then, in practical terms, money tends to flow toward people who create real value for others.

It's a question worth slowing down for, because most people never actually define the words they're chasing. They inherit them, then spend years climbing toward someone else's idea of a good life.

A sharp question from a real call

On a recent Awakened Gathering call, a student asked whether success brings wealth. She'd noticed she had quietly equated success with money in her career, and wanted to check whether that was even true. The honest answer starts with a question back: what do you mean by success?

Society's definitions leave a lot of people empty

Here's the trap. We absorb pictures of success from magazines, screens, and the people around us, and then chase them without asking if they're ours.

"There are plenty of people who have money but run around all day in a state of panic. Are they really successful? Someone might be a success by society's standards and feel like a failure inside. We have to redefine these things personally."

This isn't just philosophy. When researchers Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton studied income and wellbeing, they found that beyond covering life's needs, more money stops reliably buying more day-to-day happiness. Money matters, and not having enough is a genuine stress. But "more" is not the same as "fulfilled." That's why defining success for yourself comes first.

Define it for yourself

Michael's own definition is a useful example, not a template to copy:

"For me, success means being happy, being free, doing service, having a higher state of consciousness, and living my dharma. I can tell whether I'm succeeding by looking at my lifestyle."

Notice it's measured by his actual experience of life, not by anyone else's scoreboard. Your version might include money prominently, and that's completely fine. The point is that you choose the measure, consciously, rather than running on a definition you never agreed to. This is core to the wealth work in Pillar 5 of Awakened Academy: clarity about what you truly value comes before chasing any of it.

So how does money actually come?

Here's the practical link, with no hype. Money tends to move toward value:

"People give their money for the things they value. If you help other people become successful, they will want to pay you for it. Your success is ultimately in the success of others."

So the most reliable path isn't chasing money directly. It's getting clear on what you value, becoming genuinely useful to people you care about, and letting the exchange follow. Results vary, and there are no guarantees, but value creation is the soil wealth grows in.

Are you willing to define success in your own words before you spend another year chasing someone else's? That definition changes everything downstream.

Frequently asked questions

Does being successful automatically make you wealthy? Only if your definition of success includes wealth. Success and wealth mean whatever you define them to mean. Plenty of "successful" people aren't wealthy, and plenty of wealthy people don't feel successful.

Why don't I feel fulfilled even though I'm doing well? Often because you're measuring against an inherited definition of success rather than your own. Research shows that beyond meeting your needs, more money doesn't reliably add daily happiness. Defining success on your terms is the fix.

What's the most reliable way for money to follow? By creating real value for others. People pay for what they value, so becoming genuinely useful to the people you serve is the soil wealth grows in. There are no guarantees, but that's the dependable direction.
