When Are You Ready to Start Coaching?

Do you have to finish the course, heal everything, and feel completely ready before you help anyone? No. Here's the honest sign you're ready, and the one thing to learn first.
In short: You don't have to be perfect or fully healed to start coaching. You learn most by practising. The one real prerequisite is enough training to know what you're doing, so start with the foundational coaching skills, then begin, while you keep growing.
Most people who want to coach wait too long. They tell themselves they'll start once they've finished the programme, once the anxiety is gone, once they feel like a finished person. That day never quite arrives, and a gift the world needs sits in a drawer.
"When can I actually open my coaching business?"
On a recent Awakened Gathering call, a student asked the question almost every new coach carries: at what point can I start? Do I need to complete every course first? Do I need to work through all my own issues before I'm allowed to help someone else?
Here's the honest answer, in two halves.
You don't have to be finished to begin
You will never be a finished person, and that's a good thing. As Arielle put it on the call:
"We don't have to wait until we're perfect, and you're going to learn the most ultimately by getting started and practising."
In fact, believing you've completed your own inner work is the warning sign, not the green light. Michael says it bluntly:
"If you think you've figured everything out and there's no more work to do on yourself, that's a really bad sign. The sign of a real teacher is that they recognise there's always another level."
So the bar isn't "fully healed." The bar is honest, humble, present, and a little further down the road than the person you're helping. You can coach from where you actually are.
The one thing to learn first
Here's where "just start" needs a guardrail. You don't have to be perfect, but you do need to know what you're doing in a session. Starting with zero training isn't brave, it's how you get out of your depth and stop serving the person.
So the move is simple: learn the foundational coaching skills first, then begin practising. In Awakened Academy, that's exactly what the Coaching 101 work in Pillar 3 is for. It teaches you how to hold a session, ask real questions, and work safely with someone's inner world, so that when you start, you start grounded. Many of our students begin with free practice sessions while they're still in the programme, telling people honestly that they're training. That's the sweet spot: trained enough to help, humble enough to keep learning.
Are you willing to be a real beginner, well-trained but still learning, instead of waiting to be flawless? That willingness is the start of every coaching career.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to finish my certification before I start coaching? Not entirely. Learn the foundational coaching skills first, then begin with practice clients while you complete the rest. You'll learn fastest by doing, as long as you've got the basics to do it safely.
Do I have to heal all my own issues before I coach others? No, and you never fully "finish." You only need to be honest, stable, and a step further along than the person you're helping. Believing you've fixed everything is actually a red flag.
How do I start coaching with no clients or track record? Begin with free practice sessions, told honestly as practice. They build your skill, your confidence, and your first testimonials, which is how paid work starts.
